A little bit about STEELDECK
Legend Theatrical stocks STEELDECK staging units in our rental inventory. We have had great success with these decks and prefer them over other brands for a variety of reasons...
STEELDECKs are easy. All of the hardware pieces used to tighten the decks and connect them to each other only need to be hand tightened. To connect two decks together, you simply line them up, put a 3/8" bolt through the holes in the frame and hand tighten with a wing nut. You often don't even need to use every hole available. More often than not, the perimeter holes are the only ones that need bolts.
The legs for STEELDECKs are simply standard schedule 40 1-1/2" ID black pipe. With other deck systems, you have to purchase proprietary legs at standard lengths. If you need a custom size, you need to order it and pay more for it. With STEELDECK, you can go down to your local hardware store, pick up some pipe, cut it to length and throw it on your deck. You don't need to thread the pipe, just slide it into the deck's slots and hand tighten the ergonomically formed knobs.
STEELDECKs are strong. If you look at the picture on the right, you'll see that the decks are built like truss units which of course gives them a great advantage over standard platforms. It is nice not to have to worry about weight when you are putting these together. These decks can take 6 legs, but we hardly ever do more than 4 because they are so sturdy that there is never a worry of bowing them. If you go to the STEELDECK intro page you can see a picture in which the decks are holding up a car. Notice that the middle legs are not even being used, just the corner legs!
Since such heavy duty pipes are used for the legs, STEELDECKs can go pretty high without needing bracing. If you have 4 decks connected to each other, you could go up 6 to 8 feet before needing to cross-brace them. That is pretty impressive. A single deck can go up to 4, maybe 5 feet without needing bracing. It makes things so much easier for set up when you don't have to be extra sensitive with your decks' stability.
STEELDECKs are flexible. There are a bunch of great accessories for these decks that you can purchase or make which will greatly diversify your STEELDECKs' abilities. -Screw-in leg jacks can be added to your legs if you are setting up on an uneven lawn so that you can keep your decks perfectly level. -Caster inserts can make your decks mobile. -Leg couplers
can be used to save on install time and pipe costs. It would normally take 64 legs to support 16 decks connected in a rectangular formation. Using STEELDECK's leg couplers, you'd only have to use 25 legs! With today's steel prices, that is a huge savings!
-STEELDECK offers a large selection of standard sized decks, but will custom build any shape you need! They are up for the challenge.
