Don Giovanni
Don Giovanni was a challenging set. The director wanted two large and forboding looking castle units with curved staircases. But each unit had to be on wheels so that they could make quick and silent scene changes in full view of the audience. Another challenge was that the set had to fit through the loading area which was smaller than the design. We had to build each unit so that they would break down into smaller rolling pieces that could fit through the loading door, and then quickly be assembled so that our load in time was less than one working day. This design took much preventative forsight.
But on load in day, the set rolled in and assembled without a hitch. And each unit could be pushed around the stage by one technician. We also used lightweight foam products to create strong stone looking 19th century balustrades that were attached to the rolling units.
