The San Francisco Garden Show

Legend teamed up with a local landscape designer, Susan Wyche, and many other landscape and sculpture professionals to help design and build a set for the San Francisco Garden show, one of the premier garden shows in the US.

It is by invitation only that a landscape artist has the opportunity to have a booth at the show. Legend was very excited about being selected by Susan for the project and believes it is a great example of the exciting things that can come out of Santa Cruz. The set was fairly elaborate consisting of a beautiful courtyard outside of a house displaying the natural plants of our area and demonstrating an ecological way of treating our home walls, roofs and gardens. The booth was enjoyed by the public and judges alike, and our team recieved the prestigious Sunset Magazine award.

One of the main features on this booth was the living roof. The entire roof of this set was covered in a beautiful mosaic of small plants that not only are pleasing to the eye, but help to keep the house cooler, and utilize all of the otherwise wasted rain water that falls on the roof. Along with the living roof, were the living walls. Lightweight tiles that house small planter boxes were attached to certain walls of the house. Excess water from the roof is guided to these living walls so that every remaining drop of water is put to use and the byproduct is an amazing, organic building.

The designer of the project wanted a stained cement look for the patio of this set. But we obviously couldn't use actual cement. So Legend synthesized the look using paint and soundboard. Many people at the garden show observing the booth were shocked to find out that the floor wasn't real stained cement.

In the process of building this environmentally conscious set we learned that standard lauan is manufactured in a way that is far from environmentally safe. In reaction to this, Legend decided to find a comparable and safer product. We did so, and it happened to be cheaper than lauan as well. Even to this day we use this product on our sets. This lauan issue caused a major slow down in the construction process, but it was worth the struggle and we were still able to finish the set on time!
